Since his November 2004 release, 1HO6721 Darlawn Mtoto HOSEA’s success in the CRI line-up has been solid and steady. In the past two years he’s remained a well-rounded, sought-after sire always in the top 20 percent of the breed for Lifetime Net Merit. His unique balance of production, conformation, health traits and strong pedigree continues to satisfy dairy producers worldwide.
An impressive Pedigree
Backed by four generations of Excellent or Very Good Dams of Merit, HOSEA has an impressive family lineage. Dam, Darlawn Rudolph Honibun-ET, scoring VG-87, VG-MS at six years old, is one of several prominent cows in the Mark and Paul Darling herd in Nicholson, Pennsylvania. Honibun completed a best 365-day record of 18,974m 692f 592p (kg) and produced over 66,990 kilograms lifetime milk.
His granddam, Wallmac Bstar Dixie Honi-ET, EX-91, 2E, GMD, DOM, demonstrated an all-round profitability and reached a peak production record of 5-00 365d 21,659m 629f 606p (kg).
Dixie-Lee Legacy-ET, VG-87, GMD, DOM and Lar-Lin Glendell Haiti, EX-93, GMD, DOM are second and third granddams respectively. Both have commendable lifetime production records with Legacy at 61,131 kilograms milk and Haiti at 50,798.

Further Family Findings
CRI has searched HOSEA’s family tree finding several sire sampling opportunities.
The most recent to begin sampling was 1HO9109 Handyman, an Amel Don son by Hosea’s full sister Darlawn Mtoto Hagar. CRI Dairy Procurement Specialist Paul Haskins, describes the full sister as like most Mtoto daughters - “above average sized with good dairy strength and width throughout, strong feet and legs and a very pleasing mammary system.”
CRI is working extensively with the Darlawn Mtoto Honibea branch of the family. Though not a full sister to HOSEA, Honibea is a daughter of Mtoto and a full sister to HOSEA’s dam. Currently, four Honibea sons are being sampled at CRI.
CRI is also working with Honibea’s female offspring. A daughter by Ricecrest Marshall, Darlawn R Marshall Hayla, freshened and exhibits many family characteristics: dairy, yet strong with lots of capacity and correctness. Hayla has performed extremely well in the herd and has two sons in the CRI system: 183HO1131 Haymaker, sired by 1HO5588 SOSA and sampled by GENOIS/France, and a Throne son 1HO8567 Horizon.
After being purchased by Rick Wadel (Wa-Del), Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, and Dale Rice of Ricecrest Farms, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Honibea has also had an extremely stylish Stormatic daughter, which CRI plans to sample sons of in the future.
Siring the Profitable Kind
“HOSEA daughters are average sized to a little larger than average,” according to Mike Yoder, CRI Progeny Support Specialist, who has seen over 25 HOSEA daughters. “They have plenty depth of rib, and they get deeper and more capacious as they calve again. They have adequate width through the rump and are level to slightly sloped from hooks to pins. Their udders are extremely well attached and the attachments hold up through additional lactations. Udder cleft is very strong, teat placement is correct, and udder texture is fine.” He does recommend, however, to protect daughters slightly for foot angle as the Rudolph foot sometimes wants to come out.
“Overall, I’m extremely pleased with HOSEA’s daughters as they calve in for their third lactations. They are maturing into profitable brood cows that should stay in the herd for several more lactations.”
